Essential Tree Surgery Services

Crown thinning is a process used to make a tree less dense and therefore more stable.  MIG garden Care is experts in this kind of tree surgery and we can visit your property to assess the tree to see if this is the right approach for it.

It is most common to use crown thinning to allow more light through the crown of the tree.  If shade below the tree is particularly dense, this is a good course of action and also makes the tree look smarter and in better shape.  Another issue might be that the tree is too dense, and this is making it vulnerable to high winds because wind cannot pass through the thick branches.

However, it doesn’t always work for every type of tree.  Maples, limes and some oak trees don’t make the best subjects for tree thinning because they tend to regrow the branches quickly and often end up denser than they were before!  The other reason we might advise against crown thinning is if the tree is unstable due to other defects.  This might be problems with the base of the tree, the roots or even the soil it is in.  By thinning the crown in these situations, it could make the tree more unstable and prone to falling.
