Trees are amazing natural features but like any plant, they just keep growing. This sometimes means that you need to reign them in a little and one way of doing this is to get a tree surgeon to handle crown thinning.
Crown thinning is a process where some of the smaller branches of the tree (known as tertiary branches) are removed. The aim is to create a uniform foliage density in the middle of the tree that is evenly spaced out. It sounds a bit complex and it can be which is why it is best handled by experts such as the tree surgeons at MIG Garden Care.
Thinning is a delicate process which doesn’t change the overall shape or size of the tree. Instead, branches are removed carefully and no more than 30% of the total number of branches are taken away. The end result is a tree that lets more light to pass through, has better resistance to the wind and doesn’t weigh as much. The benefits to this are the tree is stronger, better able to cope with the weather conditions and lets more light to the garden areas below.
Crown thinning is always done with the overall health of the tree in mind. Cut too much and you risk harming the tree, even killing it. Cut in the wrong places and you could make it vulnerable to wind damage. But done correctly, it helps both you and the tree.
