Thinning is a delicate process which doesn’t change the overall shape or size of the tree. Instead, branches are removed carefully and no more than 30% of the total number of branches are taken away. The end result is a tree that lets more light to pass through, has better resistance to the wind and doesn’t weigh as much. The benefits to this are the tree is stronger, better able to cope with the weather conditions and lets more light to the garden areas below.
Crown thinning is always done with the overall health of the tree in mind. Cut too much and you risk harming the tree, even killing it. Cut in the wrong places and you could make it vulnerable to wind damage. But done correctly, it helps both you and the tree.
