The more often you can cut the grass the better it will look, but you must get the correct level in which to cut or you can damage your grass. Another thing to be aware of is that the more that grass is cut then the more that nitrogen levels are depleted. Nitrogen is the compound that allows the plant to grow, its what makes a lawn feed cause the grass to grow head high in a couple of weeks.
However the grass plant does not get nitrogen from the environment, so it must be given back to the lawn in order to keep it healthy. One way that this can be done is to cut the grass and leave cuttings on top to dry out and breakdown, this is called a mulching .The other way is what I had mentioned above and is to feed your grass with a treatment that contains nitrogen, the trick here is to find one that has a low ratio of nitrogen, look for it to read under 5 for N on the label. This will allow your grass to keep healthy growth but it will not do so at a rate where you need to be cutting it every 3 days.
As gardeners we are using these treatments a lot and we buy our products from sports turf suppliers, a 25 kilo bag can last 3 or 4 treatments for a fairly standard garden.
Job 2:
Grass cutting in the month of September can be a wet and clammy day. One thing we find out as the the wet weather begins to come into place is that a lot of gardens don’t have the rite drainage in place. This is important both for the usage of the garden and for the grass health, as waterlogged patches can kill off the grass long term and often make gardens unusable.
A lot of new build estates that we work in don’t have adequate lawn drainage and in turn also find that the grass turns to moss.
A fairly easy solution without having to spend a lot of money putting in better drainage is to treat your grass every year with an iron rich solution at the start of the growing season. This is when the moss is most thickest after a long Scottish winter. The iron kills off much of the moss and helps kick start the grass growing.
Some gardens that are so over grown may need a more hands on approach and actively scarify the grass to dig out the dead moss.
